Closing the New Digital Divide

Image
This is my 13.25 page final paper for a class back when I was studying at LSU. It's all about how the access to the internet may be closing, but do people know how to use the internet effectively? Closing the New Digital Divide INTRODUCTION At first glance the digital divide looks to be closing with the implementation of projects to bring connectivity and computers to underserved populations, and while this work is not yet complete across all nations, much of the first world’s people have access to an internet terminal of some kind. Here in the USA the PEW research institute indicates that as of 2015, 84% of US citizens have access to the internet in one form or another (Rainie, 2015). The reality is, with time and money, access to the internet will be nearly universal in the US, especially as wireless technology and cellular technology expand. But what does access tell us? Only that users can get to technology, not that they know how to best use it. This is an exploration of why u...

Personal Learning Network

Image
For my Instructional Role of the Information Professional class we were to make a video about our Personal Learning Network as well as write a paper about it. My papers and video are below! Online Professional Learning Network:  Goals, Scope, Maintenance, In Action Goal Statements      Staying flexible and on top of current ideas in the library world is essential due to the drastically changing environments in which libraries exist. My professional learning network will include frequently updated digital resources as well as time honored digital resources of merit.  The learning I hope to accomplish with my professional learning network is three-fold: first and foremost the focus is young adults learning in the library. Teens are a complex mixture of adult and child, with their own set of unique needs from a public library. I will learn more about best practices for teaching teens and how teens interact with the public library environment through professional, p...

Piggy Backing

Image
From my Introduction to Information Technology class.  This assignment was to discuss whether or not Piggybacking (using someone else's wireless connection without them knowing) was ethical or not. Written as a group project. When the Mayo Spills Over: A Piggybacking Story Piggybacking is when someone accesses another person’s WIFI internet connection without permission. Often times, the person paying the bill for the WIFI connection is not even aware others may be stealing from them. In this instance a coffee shop owner, Rebecca, believes her next-door neighbor, the sandwich shop owner Sneaky Ed, is encouraging his patrons to use her WIFI. In this case of Rebecca and Sneaky Ed, Rebecca should take steps to protect herself from piggybacking neighbors. Why? At the least, the coffee shop’s internet connection will be slowed down by additional users, but also “any cyberattack or illegal behavior a hacker initiates from your wireless network could get you in trouble with the authoritie...

The Handmaid's Tale : Graphic Novel and Novel

Image
Comparing and Contrasting the theme of Independence in the Handmaid's Tale novel and graphic novel for young adults. From my class Information Needs of Young Adults Independence, Handmaids, and Teens      The Handmaid’s Tale  by Margaret Atwood (1986/1998) was first published in 1986, after the gains of the 1960s and 1970s feminism had subsided (Neuman, 2006). In this time when feminism was under attack (Neuman, 2006, p. 859), Margaret Atwood (1986/1998) clearly saw trouble because  The Handmaid’s Tale  paints a terrible future for women at the hands of the new Gilead government. Most notably, Atwood’s (1986/1998) post-United States Gilead stripped all women of any independence; they have strictly assigned roles to perform complete with uniforms, with the handmaids’ lives being the most curtailed as they are treated as silent, walking wombs. The idea of independence as being something wanted but not had could attract teen readers to Offred’s tale. Although ...

Evaluating Computer Performance

Image
In my Intro to Information Technology class we had to evaluate our computer's performance.  This was a favorite assignment for me because it got me closer to knowing my computers! Evaluating Computer Performance I started this exercise by closing all applications then shutting down my late 2013 iMac. I waited ten minutes then cold booted it. I then went to Finder, Utilities, and clicked Activity Monitor. Under the memory tab, I was surprised immediately to find that Adobe Creative Cloud was taking up the most memory from the get go at 174 MB. I attempted to download and use Adobe Photoshop for free via Creative Cloud. However, my FSU sign in information did not work and the program at this point is useless until I have FSU’s IT team add my FSU log in information to the approved list of students allowed free access to Adobe Creative Cloud. I checked under System Preferences, Users and Groups, Login Items to see if the Creative Cloud was listed there; it was not. There were actually ...
