STEM for Young Children

Image
Our professor in LIS 5564, Information Needs of Children, directed us to write an annotated bibliography on a topic of our choice as though we were creating a small collection at a library for children. I chose STEM for children ages 0-6 for my topic, and the following is my annotated bibliography. Introduction Why STEM for such young children? The following list of recommended purchases is curated for children ages 0 to 6 years old around the topic of STEM. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math, and this idea has become hot the past 5 or so years. According to research, a child’s will to enter a STEM field for future employment is established before age 14, and the need for even more STEM professionals will grow and grow in the future (Raupp, 2018). Therefore, it is especially important to introduce very young minds to the STEM fields, so they may decide later if those subjects are of interest. Importance of Diversity             However, white males vastly outnumbe

Bias in a Picture Book

Image
Midsemester in LIS 5564, Information Needs of Children, I wrote a paper analyzing the potential biases of a picture book. The following is my analysis of Fry Bread . Introduction The book to be inspected is  Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story , written by Kevin Noble Maillard and illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal (2019). It is the story of fry bread as food, shape, sound, color, flavor, time, art, history, place, and nation. The book discusses fry bread briefly in each of its aspects; how it is both uniting and diverse. The illustrations focus on this as well, featuring adults and children brought together as a family yet appearing different from each other; blond hair to dark hair, deep skin to light skin. It teaches the who, what, where, when, and why of the dish fry bread while emphasizing the togetherness of family and nations. A lengthy note at the end of the book further explains fry bread in context. Check the Illustrations In this picture book, the illustrations depict

Childhood and Reading

Image
In LIS 5564, Information Needs of Children, our professor assigned a final project to focus on teaching parents about the importance of reading in the lives of children. What follows is the script I created, and here is a link to the slide presentation . I chose to focus on very young children. The Journey to Reading Slide 1: Introduction Hello everyone! My name is Emily Bufford, and I work for the New Orleans Public Library as a Children’s Librarian. I want to let you know that developing a love for reading happens well before a child can read. In fact, there are several early literacy milestones children reach before they can read. Something as simple as responding to words, such as gesturing or cooing when spoken to, suggests a baby is learning about words (Zettler-Greeley, 2018). For the earliest learners, everyday interactions that include words are the beginning of learning to read; learning to read is not about any special program or book series or video course. Marketing Analysis

For LIS 5602 we did a semester long analysis of a chosen organization; here is mine of New Orleans Public Library. 1. Introduction              The New Orleans Public Library dates back to a single house in the French Quarter in the year 1843 (New Orleans Public Library, n.d.-g). In the 178 years since then, the library has expanded to 15 locations throughout the city, touching nearly every major neighborhood. Beginning in 2019, prior to the pandemic, New Orleans Public Library began their new 10 year strategic plan process, which was partially slowed by Covid-19 (New Orleans Public Library, 2021-a). Their mission statement is “New Orleans Public Library: Transforming Lives, Enriching Neighborhoods, and Preserving History” (New Orleans Public Library, n.d.-h, para. 1), which rings true to their actions. They want to transform lives through early and adult literacy, enrich neighborhoods through many locations, and preserve history with their city of New Orleans archive.              Ne
